In any business, the best strategy is to focus on things that are working and get rid of things that aren't. For that reason, so many retail chains have been closing underperforming stores. It's something GameStop, Sears, Walgreens, CVS, TGI Fridays, Foot Locker, Pizza Hut, Boston Market, Best Buy and many others have done and now, the biggest retailer in the country will join them and shutter stores this month.

Walmart revealed a list of 11 stores in several states set to close in October, with California being the most affected. There will also be closures in Ohio, Colorado, Wisconsin, Georgia and Maryland. The full list is:

  • 2121 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA
  • 605 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon, CA
  • 2753 E. Eastland Center Drive, West Covina, CA
  • 4080 Douglas Boulevard, Granite Bay, CA
  • 40580 Albrae Sreet, Fremont, CA
  • 10400 E. Colfax Avenue, Aurora, CO
  • 7025 W. Main Street, Milwaukee, WI
  • 3579 S. High Street, Columbus, OH
  • 4725 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA
  • 3101 Roswell Road, Marietta, GA
  • 1238 Putty Hill Avenue, Towson, MD

Walmart will be offering employees at the affected stores the option to work at a nearby location or they can accept a severance package.

Even though the company is closing stores, it doesn't mean they are troubled. In fact, they plan to open a dozen new stores by the end of the year. Those locations, known as neighborhood markets, are expected to be smaller and focus more on groceries and pharmacy services. Walmart will also be remodeling 650 stores in the coming months to update and modernize them.
