If you frequently visit Griffith Park, you might want to be careful with what you keep inside your vehicle as there have been many car break-ins that are more targeted towards rental cars.
“Be safe, lock your cars, hide your valuables. Do not leave credit cards, IDs or passports in your vehicles,” Gary Walters, commanding officer for northeast patrol, said during a news conference Tuesday.
There are signs posted around Griffith Park that are there to remind visitors to "lock it, hide it, keep it." LAPD is urging people not to leave things in plain sight such as their luggage, purses, bags, passports, etc when parked around the park. They also believe that the thefts are from organized groups based out of San Francisco and Oakland according to surveillance videos they've watched from the incidents. The reason behind why the thieves are targeting rental cars is that they're easily identifiable and that:
“When they see a rental car up here in the park, there’s a greater likelihood that there will be money and/or valuables,” Ventura said. “Those tend to be targeted or hit more often.”
Be careful and make sure not to leave any valuables when you visit Griffith Park. The break-ins so far have not been violent but windows are being smashed to break into the vehicles. Click here for more.
