Steve Lacy Announces New Album & Teases Potential Reunion With The Internet

Steve Lacy is preparing to release his fourth studio album, and he's giving fans a taste of what to expect before it arrives later this year.

On Thursday, August 14, Rolling Stone shared its cover story featuring the "Bad Habit" crooner. During their chat, Lacy revealed his next project is called Oh Yeah? and described the album cover, which appears to be inspired by a certain beverage mascot. While describing the inspiration behind the album, Lacy simply replied, "the question’s important.”

“This one has taken a lot of time and thought,” he said. “I keep using the word ‘design.’ It feels like fully designing a new language for myself.”

"I got humbled a couple times," he explained. "So now I'm like, 'stop trying to sequence the f**king music and just write the songs.'"

The 27-year-old artist doesn't give too much away, but RS called the album “Lacy’s most confident work yet.” The album will arrive three years after his breakthrough LP Gemini Rights. It was led by three singles, including "Bad Habits," which helped him earn his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Steve Lacy also reflected on his time with The Internet. Lacy joined the Hip-Hop/R&B collective consisting of singer-songwriter Syd and producer Matt Martians when he was a teenager, shortly after his father died of cancer. Lacy served as an executive producer for the group's 2015 album Ego Death when he was in high school. The album went on to earn Lacy his first-ever Grammy nomination. He also contributed to The Internet's 2018 album Hive Mind. It's been a minute since he worked with Syd and Martians, but in the interview, Lacy said they've been "hanging out" again like old times and fans can expect new music soon.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lacy recalled being dissed by Drake during a livestream with xQc last year. After "Bad Habits" played in the background, Drizzy referred to Lacy as a "fragile opp," especially after the Compton native went to Kendrick Lamar's "The Pop Out" show. Despite the disrespectful connotation, Lacy said he "loves" Drake.

“I love Drake; I grew up listening to Drake and s**t.”
